Interdisciplinary MFA Arts and Media alum Davina Stewart was a visiting artist in Victoria Brockett’s SYSTEMS OF SOCIAL STRATIFICATION seminar. Building on her project Artists for Structural Change, Stewart worked with the essential premise of her project stating we are all responsible for the advancement of America; students were led in interactive activities to assess how their ascribed and acquired traits could be posited as assets they bring to the table in solving the inherent inequity within our social system. Students were additionally asked to identify the ascribed and acquired traits of people not present at the problem solving table and the possible insights they could bring to the endeavor. The goal is to illustrate how various groups are absented from critical decision making processes and our national responsibility to grasp how cultural pluralism is an asset and integral to creating a more equitable society.
