Through an artist talk and demo utililizing art samples, an engraved block and tools, learn about the history of wood engraving from Richard Wagner, praised by the Book Club of California as “unsurpassed in the world of contemporary wood-engraving.” His lecture will be at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday April 15 at Anchor Graphics, 623 S. Wabash, 2nd floor.

Wagener is a renowned artist who works primarily in wood engraving and printmaking with imagery oriented around plant life, nature, California, landscape and the built environment. His technique involves engraving an image on mirror-smooth surface of a meticulously prepared endgrain woodblock. His illustrations have appeared in numerous fine press and illustrated books and he has exhibited internationally.

Wagener has an undergraduate degree from the University of San Diego and a graduate degree from Art Center College of Design. He has been engraving wood for over thirty years and his work has been in a number of fine press editions, most notably with Peter Koch in Berkeley and the Book Club of California. In 2006 Wagener established his own imprint Mixolydian Editions. He currently lives and works in Northern California.
