Mary Mazurek, an InterArts Media alumna, will have her documentary New Media Music Chicago aired on WTTW this Sunday night, at 11:30 p.m., with additional airings scheduled for later this fall. Mazurek, who is adjunct faculty in the Audio Arts + Acoustics department at Columbia, originally developed the idea for the documentary in an InterArts Media course taught by Paul Catanese. The piece, which had previously been screened at the Awards Chicago REEL Short Film Festival (September 2009) and the New Media Caucus Conference (February 2010), explores Chicago-based musical ensembles that use new media in their performances. The documentary highlights a number of Chicago alternative groups, including eighth blackbird, International Contemporary Ensemble, and We Can and We Must.
In June of 2010, the work received the Golden Palm Award at the Mexico International Film Festival. Although the WTTW debut runs rather late on Sunday evening, future airings will be at different times of the day, providing more opportunities for fans of new music and new media combinations.
