Anchor Graphics Announces Summer Artists-in-Residence

This past week Anchor Graphics announced the recipients of their three spring/summer residency appointments. The three artists, Megan Sterling, Mary Jones, and Angela Young will be working at Anchor for three weeks each over the summer on creating new work.

Anchor Graphics’ Artist-in-Residence program was initiated as an opportunity for both emerging and established artists who have demonstrated a strong interest in printmaking, but may not have access to professional presses and equipment. The application process has always been open to all experienced printmakers from around the world, and past resident artists include Richard Repasky, Chris Sperandio, and Don Colley.

The program provides artists who are already proficient in printmaking an uninterrupted stretch of time to develop or work on a body of print-based work. Anchor provides the basic materials, shop access, the technical assistance. Columbia students have the opportunity to meet and talk with the artists during their stay. At the end of their residency, each artist presents a public lecture about their current projects, and donate some of the prints created during their residency to the Anchor Graphics archives.

Megan Sterling, Anchor’s first summer resident artist starts on May 13 and continues through May 31. She is an artist and printmaker from Idaho currently living in Chicago. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her Printmaking BFA from Boise State University. She a full-time faculty member at Harrington College of Design in Chicago.

Only three days after Sterling, Mary Jones sets up shop at Anchor. Jones, a Professor in Art and Design at Grand View University in Des Moines, IA, will be working at Anchor from June 3–24. Professor Jones received her BFA in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and her MFA at Indiana University in Bloomington.

There is a bit more of a break between the second and third residency. Artist Angela Young will land at Anchor on August 5 and work through August 26. Young’s work investigates patterns and textures that are often overlooked and ignored, often presenting a visual narrative that isn’t always immediately identifiable. “By creating work that focuses on small segments of my body, I am slowly coming to accept what makes me a person as a whole,” says Young. Young received her printmaking BFA at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, and her MFA in Printmaking from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University.
