The Aljira Center for Contemporary Art in Newark, NJ will be hosting the presentation and discussion Concept and Craft: Hand Made in the Twenty-First Century on Saturday February 9, 2013, from 1:00–4:00 p.m. The panel discussion will feature six dynamic artists, including InterArts Book and Paper Assistant Professor Melissa Potter.

The event will present the chronology and conceptual frameworks surrounding revitalization of women’s craft and decorative arts as a viable artistic means to express female experience in the 1960s and 1970s. This post-Women’s Liberation Movement embrace of age-old domestic craft celebrated its political and subversive potential. Panelists Melissa Potter, L.J. Roberts, Andrew Salomone, Nathan Vincent, Bisa Washington, and Noelle Lorraine Williams will consider issues of globalization, technology, and generational differences of opinion as they explore the topic. The panel will be moderated by Alyson Pou, with special guest Judith Brodsky of the Institute for Women and Art at Rutgers University.
