Multi-Tasking and Multiple Appearances Just Par for the Course

Sid Yiddish, a self-described “semi-sweet kosher industrial poet-throat-singing radio broadcasting-Furby spy,” has not wasted any time since starting in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Media MFA program this fall. His new CD Sid Yiddish And His Candy Store Henchmen Presents: Leather Strawberries; Live On WZRD has just been released on Aleatory Records, followed immediately by a release of two live performance recordings with his other band, Torque Monks.

In October, one of his original compositions garnered a spot on one of radio personality Dr. Demento’s themed playlists. The October 6 playlist, which can be streamed online here, was built around the special topic of “Football,” with Yiddish’s song Man Titties second in the rotation.

For the rest of the month, Yiddish is performing with The Great Fire: A Traveling Truck Show. This performance group, the brain child of Kayce Baker and Chris Lin, is a wacky performing arts event touring around Chicago during October with a moving truck as our pop-up stage. Reviving the form of early American traveling shows and referencing Chicago neighborhood histories after the Great Fire of 1871, the performers playfully spin a tale that engages audiences with storytelling, music, comedy, multimedia dioramas, and magic.

Time Out Chicago recently featured the group in their “Things To Do This Week” column, giving special note to Yiddish’s performance as “the guy who sings from his throat like Froggy from the Little Rascals.” Yiddish graduated from Columbia in 1990 with a BA in print journalism, and shows no signs of slowing down.
