$5000 Commission: Call For Artists

CAC is currently accepting applications for an original, large-scale, three-dimensional ceiling installation as part of Taste of Chicago’s new Chef du Jour dining tent (July 11-15, 2012). Chef du Jour is a new initiative of Taste of Chicago that will offer the general public an opportunity to enjoy a $40 sit-down, three-course meal prepared by five renowned local chefs over the course of five days. Chef du Jour promises to garner widespread media attention and attract approximately 1,000 guests. Taste of Chicago is eager to incorporate a visual arts component created by a local Chicago artist to complement the sophisticated fare and creative ingenuity of the participating chefs. CAC is proud to partner with Taste of Chicago to organize and manage this special commission opportunity, open to current CAC members only (Join or renew now).

Wednesday dinner, Carlos Gaytan (Mexique)

Thursday dinner, Tony Mantuano (Spiaggia, Bar Toma)

Friday dinner, Graham Elliot (Graham Elliot)

Saturday lunch, Stephanie Izard (Girl & the Goat)

Sunday lunch, Jimmy Bannos Sr. (Heaven on Seven)

Project Specifics

-Installation area is a 40 feet x 60 feet frame tent with structured crossbars and wires that can be used to support the suspended work

-Selected artist will have an opportunity to meet with tent company vendor to discuss logistics of installation

-Selected artist will receive $5,000 to cover both commission and all material costs (including installation/deinstallation)

-This project is for a three-dimensional, suspended ceiling installation only that will meet applicable weight restrictions to ensure the safety and liability of the event

-Selected artist should be flexible and willing to make adjustments to the proposed work based on Taste of Chicago’s needs and requirements as the principal client for this commission

-Artist must manage installation of the work, including all materials and equipment needed

-Installation will take place July 9-11 and deinstallation will take place July 16

-All renderings must allude to one design concept and must represent the actual proposed project

Selection Criteria

-Proposed design should exhibit an innovative design that enhances the environment of the dining tent and impacts the overall dining experience

-Clarity and specificity of proposal demonstrates clear understanding of final project including exact scale, weight, material usage and installation needs

Commission Fee

The selected artist will receive a total of $5,000 to cover commission, materials, installation and deinstallation.

Timeline

– April 30: Applications made available at chicagoartistscoalition.org

– May 21: Application deadline

– May 26: Selected Artist notified

– May 27-July 8: Artist meets with tent company, finalizes design, creates work and prepares for installation

– July 9-10: Installation

– July 16: Deinstall work
