Master Printer: The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art is seeking an energetic and experienced Master Printer, who is a motivated self-starter and team player. The ICA Print Center opened in June 2007 with the opening of our new facility in downtown San Jose. During the past five years, the program has grown and changed according to the needs of our printmaking community. The Master Printer develops and administers all aspects of the ICA’s Print Center program including workshops, Open Access Days, and Artists in Residence. Reporting to the ICA’s Executive Director, the Master Printer is an important member of the ICA team, participating in all aspects of programming.

About the ICA

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary is a nonprofit contemporary art gallery located in the SoFA arts and entertainment district of downtown San Jose. Founded in 1980, the ICA has remained dedicated to providing a venue and generating meaningful exposure for emerging and under-recognized mid-career artists. Each year we present 12-14 exhibitions in three galleries that feature technology-based work and site-specific installations as well as drawing, printmaking, sculpture and photography. We also have a fully equipped Print Center offering regularly scheduled workshops with a master printer and open access sessions. The Print Center hosts up to three artists in residence each year.

Major Responsibilities

WORKSHOPS

•Develop and administer ICA Print Center workshop and Open Access programs

•Teach printmaking workshops and Master Classes

•Develop an accurate budget for all workshops and studio services

•Maintain studio, equipment, tools and determine all supplies required

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

•Administer Artist-in-Residence program, including contacting and scheduling artists and projecting budgets

•Determine and order all supplies required per project

•Work with each AIR to facilitate his/her print “vision”

•Print AIR editions and other editioning projects

Additional Responsibilities

•Publish Print Center activities and events on the ICA website, eTapestry cart, and all appropriate social media outlets including the ICA Facebook pages

•Participate in ICA events such as the Annual Art Auction, ArtHouse and attend Print Fairs

•Manage Print Center internship program

•Continue to develop programs and increase studio capabilities

•Provide support to other staff members as required for Print Center programs (i.e. Development and Marketing Directors)

Candidate Qualifications

REQUIRED

•MFA in Printmaking

•At least one year experience working with a master printer collaborating with artists and printing editions

•At least one year teaching experience at the college level and/or in a workshop environment

•Printmaking skills required in copper etching (non-toxic methods a plus), photopolymer, drypoint, monotype, collagraph, screen-printing and digital printing

•Strong organizational and project management skills

•Ability to work within a budget

•Flexible schedule (evenings and weekends required)

•Strong verbal and communication skills (must interact with artist, students, ICA donors and art community)

PREFERRED

•Experience in non-profit arts organization, administration and/or arts programming

Compensation:

Salary is commensurate with experience; benefits available, including 100% of health care insurance costs including vision and dental.
