WARREN CHAPMAN JOINS COLUMBIA COLLEGE CHICAGO AS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT ON JUNE 1
University of Illinois Chicago Vice Chancellor to Leave Position for Two-Year Interim Role
CHICAGO (May 17, 2012) – University of Illinois Chicago Vice Chancellor Warren K. Chapman, Ph.D., will join Columbia College Chicago in an interim role as senior vice president beginning on June 1.
During the two-year term, Chapman will ensure a smooth transition between the presidency of Warrick L. Carter, who will retire in August 2013, and a new president. A nationwide search is underway to fill the role of Columbia College president.
Chapman, who has been a Columbia College Trustee since 2003, also will oversee the implementation of the college’s year-long self evaluation of programs and operations called Blueprint | Prioritization. Faculty, staff and administration recommendations are set to be finalized this summer as the process moves into a multi-year implementation phase.
Chapman will step down from the Columbia College Board of Trustees when he begins this new position.
“Warren has a 20-year relationship with Columbia College, first as a philanthropic funder and then as a long-standing trustee. He already is an asset to our community and will be an even greater leader in fulfilling the promises of Blueprint | Prioritization,” said Carter in making the announcement and citing the need for consistent leadership to guide the program’s implementation past his scheduled retirement date.
Chapman was named vice chancellor for external affairs at University of Illinois Chicago in 2006. In that role, Chapman was responsible for all relationships with external constituents of the campus, including civic, corporate, and governmental leaders in the city and state. He oversaw community relations, public affairs, marketing, and the Great Cities Commitment and coordinated the efforts of the offices of development, alumni affairs, government relations, and access and equity.
Prior to joining UIC, Chapman served as the vice president for corporate philanthropy at JPMorgan Chase. He oversaw all corporate giving including corporate contributions made to not-for-profit organizations and administered the daily operations of the Bank One Foundation.
Chapman is a well-established philanthropic professional with a varied background anchored by more than 20 years in positions focusing on technical assistance to and grant-making in education. His career encompasses nine years with the Joyce Foundation, six years with Illinois State Board of Education, and six years with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Department of Educational Policy Studies. Chapman began his career in the Illinois Department of Corrections directing programs for youthful offenders.
Chapman earned a doctorate degree in educational policy studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a concentration in the politics of education, educational policy, and social foundations of education. He holds a Master of Arts degree in inner city studies and a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art with a concentration in sculpture.
For more than sixteen-years, Chapman served as a visiting assistant professor for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Department of Educational Policy Studies. In 1992, he was awarded the O'Leary Chair for Financial Management at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Department of Educational Leadership.
