Columbia College Student Works Installed on Iconic Hotel as Part of Wabash Arts Corridor Initiative

CHICAGO (May 15, 2013) – Columbia College Chicago and the Hilton Chicago unveil the newest addition to the Wabash Arts Corridor, a series of large-scale photographs gracing the exterior of the Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan Ave. The unveiling with city and business leaders is scheduled for Friday (May 17) at 4:30 p.m. near the corner of 8th Street and Wabash Avenue, during the college’s annual Manifest Urban Arts Festival.

Students in Columbia College’s fashion photography class worked in partnership with the Global Design Services Team of Hilton Worldwide to develop the initiative. The class, which was led by internationally celebrated fashion photographers John and Andree McArthur, created a series of 17-by-25-foot images to extend the newly redesigned Hilton interior to the exterior of the building, with a fashion-focused editorial feel.

“We are very pleased at the outcome of our collaboration with Columbia College and are thrilled to be one of the first completed projects of the Wabash Arts Corridor,” said Hilton Chicago General Manager, John Wells. “This beautiful installation is something that is sure to please both community residents and our guests visiting Chicago from around the world.”

The Hilton Chicago and Columbia College partnership is part of the newly created Wabash Arts Corridor (WAC), a long-term strategy to transform the empty storefronts, parking lots and vacant land into a dynamic creative thoroughfare as a gateway to the South Loop. Other WAC projects currently in development include the Harrison Gateway, a collaboration with the Chicago Transit Authority to install images and haikus at the Harrison Red Line El Stop; to expand an established Papermaker’s Garden near Wabash and Balbo; and to update the façade of 619 S. Wabash.

“We are just seeing the tip of the iceberg of the Wabash Arts Corridor,” said Mark Kelly, vice president of student affairs, one of the driving forces behind the initiative. “We are working with key stakeholders from the South Loop and City of Chicago to make this project a centerpiece of the new Chicago Cultural Plan. We think we can make the South Loop an important tourist destination in the coming years.”

The unveiling of the photo installation will take place during the 13th annual Manifest Urban Arts Festival, a celebration of the work of Columbia College’s graduating students. The festival features more than 100 different student art exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances, multimedia presentations, screenings, readings, dance performances and more.
Chicago Sun-Times Reporter to Speak at College’s Commencement Ceremony in May

CHICAGO (April 2, 2013) – On May 18 and 19, Columbia College Chicago will honor Chicago Sun-Times journalist Mary A. Mitchell (BA, ’91) among its alumni of the year during the college’s commencement ceremonies. Three outstanding alumni, whose work and dedication to their craft is a tribute to the Columbia College spirit and ideal, will be celebrated during the graduation ceremonies as part of its annual tradition.

Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism at Columbia College Chicago in 1991. She joined the Chicago Sun-Times as an education writer soon after and has covered City Hall and the U.S. federal courts. Her columns continually raise community awareness about important advocacy issues including criminal justice, police misconduct and race relations. In several instances, her reporting led state legislators to strengthen laws protecting the rights of women and children. Today, Mitchell’s reporting often rallies African-American readers to empower their communities by providing a platform to address social ills such as failing schools, abusive police, disparities in the criminal justice system and corrupt government officials. She is also an editorial board member of the paper.

In addition to her Sun-Times column, she has written for several national publications, including Essence Magazine. From 2006 through 2010, Mitchell co-hosted a popular Sunday morning public affairs program on V-103 (102.7 FM, Chicago). She is a frequent panelist on WTTW’s “Week in Review” and FOX Chicago, and has appeared on national news programs including “Meet the Press.”

Mitchell is a recipient of numerous journalism awards, including the Award of Excellence from the National Association of Black Journalists, the Studs Terkel Award from the Community Media Workshop and the Peter Lisagor Award from the Chicago Headline Club. In 2011, Mitchell was inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame.

Emmy Nominee to Speak at College’s Graduation Ceremony in May

CHICAGO (April 2, 2013) – On May 18 and 19, Columbia College Chicago will honor Michael Goi, ASC, (BA ’80) among its alumni of the year during the college’s commencement ceremonies. Three outstanding alumni, whose work and dedication to their craft is a tribute to the Columbia College spirit and ideal, will be lauded during the graduation ceremonies as part of its annual tradition.

Goi has translated his time and degree at Columbia College Chicago into a career spanning both film and television. Born and raised in Chicago, he attended Columbia College from 1976 to 1980, graduating as valedictorian. Upon graduating, Goi worked as a part-time faculty member at Columbia College, teaching lighting and basic film techniques, while simultaneously shooting television commercials and feature documentaries for PBS such as “Wrapped In Steel” and the Emmy award-winning “Fired Up: The Story Of Public Housing.”

His career trajectory led him to work in advertising and marketing on properties in Chicago and beyond, where his work for his clients led to multiple Clio awards. He also opened a fashion photography studio that produced editorial and advertising fashion layouts. But his love of film won out, and he served as director of photography on the horror film “Moonstalker” in Nevada before moving to Los Angeles in 1990. Goi has compiled more than 50 television and film credits to date, including “American Horror Story,” “Glee” and “Witless Protection.”

Goi was nominated for the American Society of Cinematographers’ (ASC) Outstanding Achievement Award for the telefilms “The Fixer” and “Judas,” and for the TV pilot of “The New Normal” and the series “American Horror Story: Asylum.” Goi has also received Emmy nominations for “Glee” and “My Name Is Earl.”

A past president of the ASC, Goi now serves on the Board of Governors and was the editor of the 10th edition of the ASC Manual. He is also a member of the National Executive Board of the International Cinematographers Guild and a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

COLUMBIA COLLEGE CHICAGO MUSIC DEPARTMENT HOSTS MUSICIAN, SONGWRITER AND PRODUCER TODD RUNDGREN

Residency Commences April 8 and Concludes With Performance on April 12

CHICAGO (April 2, 2013) – The Columbia College Chicago Music Department welcomes musician, songwriter and producer Todd Rundgren as its last artist-in-residence of the Spring 2013 semester from April 8-12. Rundgren has been recording for more than three decades and will bring his knowledge and experience to workshops, master classes and classroom instruction, ending with a residency concert on April 12 at the Music Center.

As a songwriter, video pioneer, producer, recording artist, computer software developer, conceptualist, and, most recently, interactive artist, Rundgren has made a lasting impact on both the form and content of popular music. Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front Nazz, producing the minor hit single, “Hello It’s Me.” When the band broke up in 1969, he formed Runt, earning a Top 20 hit with the song, “We Gotta Get You a Woman.” On the release of 1972′s “Something/Anything?” he played nearly all the instruments, sang all the vocals, and covered pop bases from Motown to Hendrix and from the Beach Boys to the Beatles. Rundgren’s cult following grew in 1974 when he unveiled his cosmic/symphonic progressive-rock band Utopia.

Rundgren has also produced albums for other artists, including Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, Meatloaf, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad and Hall and Oates. He also composed the music and lyrics for the 1989 off-Broadway production of Joe Orton’s “Up Against It” as well as composing the music for television series including “Pee Wee’s Playhouse” and “Crime Story.”

Rundgren is also a pioneer of interactive music and multimedia. In 1991, the music video for his song “Time Heals,” the first music video to utilize state-of-the-art compositing of live action and computer graphics, becomes the second video to be played on MTV. His album, “No World Order” was the first interactive music-only CD, which allowed listeners to reshape the 10 songs into an infinite number of versions. His release of 1995’s “The Individualist,” was an enhanced CD which paired each song with its lyrics, graphics, and video. In 1998 founded he founded PatroNet, an innovative device that lets users subscribe to music offered directly from his site with no record company middlemen.

In April, Rundgren will release his 24th solo album, “State.”

Events Celebrate “In the Time of the Butterflies” by Julia Alvarez through May 17

CHICAGO (March 26, 2013) – Columbia College Chicago begins its celebration of The Big Read on April 3 with a kickoff event centered around this year’s book selection, “In the Time of the Butterflies,” by Julia Alvarez.

The Columbia College Chicago Library received a $16,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host The Big Read in Chicago and select suburban areas this spring. “In the Time of the Butterflies” is a historical novel about the Mirabal sisters, political dissidents who spoke out during the time of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, and who were later honored posthumously by the United Nations General Assembly.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in partnership with Arts Midwest, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The Columbia College Chicago Library is one of 78 not-for-profit organizations to receive a grant to host a Big Read project between September 2012 and June 2013. The program is also supported in part by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly.

“We have a wonderful group of partners throughout Chicagoland working together in support of this brilliant novel about three courageous women who, in the face of political oppression, sacrificed their lives for freedom, and the remaining sister who keeps their memory alive,” said Kim Hale, head of library marketing, outreach and special initiatives.

A full event calendar is available at colum.edu/bigread/ or facebook.com/ColumbiaCollegeLibrary.

The April 3 kickoff event includes a discussion with Carmelo Esterrich, associate professor of Humanities, History and Social Sciences at Columbia College, who will speak about the novel’s importance: how it brought the lives of the Mirabal sisters to light and the historical background of the Dominican Republic including the sisters’ role within the political context of the mid-twentieth century. The April 3 event also includes a reading from playwright Caridad Svich’s adaptation of “In the Time of the Butterflies” by Teatro Luna, Chicago’s All Latina Theater Company and a performance by members of Columbia’s Latino Alliance student dance group, Adrenaline.
