Columbia College has announced the selection of Michelle Gates as vice president of business affairs and CFO. She will begin her duties July 14. Gates was chosen from candidates in a national search begun earlier this year. She has extensive history in financial posts at higher education institutions and is currently senior associate vice president of financial affairs at Emerson College.
In her new role, Gates will partner with President Kim and incoming Provost and Senior Vice President Stan Wearden, playing a critical role in developing and implementing the fiscal and information technology strategy for Columbia College. She will serve as counsel to senior management and the Board of Trustees. As a member of the senior leadership team, she also will serve as an advisor to college vice presidents, evaluating and assisting them with their financial plans and economic modeling among other duties.
Gates has been at Emerson College since January 2012. She was director of budget and planning at New York University in Abu Dhabi, 2010-12, and director of university budget operations at Northern Arizona University, 2005-10. Prior to that, she was director of finance for the city of Roseburg, Oregon, as well as budget and financial analyst at University of Oregon. She has earned an MBA from Arizona State University and a BA degree in business administration from Portland State University.
