Columbia College Honors Alumna Of The Year Mary Mitchell

Chicago Sun-Times Reporter to Speak at College’s Commencement Ceremony in May

CHICAGO (April 2, 2013) – On May 18 and 19, Columbia College Chicago will honor Chicago Sun-Times journalist Mary A. Mitchell (BA, ’91) among its alumni of the year during the college’s commencement ceremonies. Three outstanding alumni, whose work and dedication to their craft is a tribute to the Columbia College spirit and ideal, will be celebrated during the graduation ceremonies as part of its annual tradition.

Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism at Columbia College Chicago in 1991. She joined the Chicago Sun-Times as an education writer soon after and has covered City Hall and the U.S. federal courts. Her columns continually raise community awareness about important advocacy issues including criminal justice, police misconduct and race relations. In several instances, her reporting led state legislators to strengthen laws protecting the rights of women and children.  Today, Mitchell’s reporting often rallies African-American readers to empower their communities by providing a platform to address social ills such as failing schools, abusive police, disparities in the criminal justice system and corrupt government officials. She is also an editorial board member of the paper.

In addition to her Sun-Times column, she has written for several national publications, including Essence Magazine. From 2006 through 2010, Mitchell co-hosted a popular Sunday morning public affairs program on V-103 (102.7 FM, Chicago). She is a frequent panelist on WTTW’s “Week in Review” and FOX Chicago, and has appeared on national news programs including “Meet the Press.”

Mitchell is a recipient of numerous journalism awards, including the Award of Excellence from the National Association of Black Journalists, the Studs Terkel Award from the Community Media Workshop and the Peter Lisagor Award from the Chicago Headline Club. In 2011, Mitchell was inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame.
