First Year in Review

Tomorrow I will have my final presentation of the year, and with that presentation I will have pretty much completed my first year in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Media M.F.A. program. Below, I thought I would share some of the highlights and ways that my art practice has evolved/improved over the course of the year.

The Tissue Culture and Art Project

In the class Art & Science Collaborations we have been studying some amazing work that blurs the line between art and science. Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr are doing some fascinating work with biological materials. The Tissue Culture and Art Project is re-appropriating tissue engineering for artistic material. they are actually making sculptures out of living tissue. “We coined the term ‘semi- living objects/products/sculptures’ to describe things that are both animate and inanimate, both part of an organism and outside of it.”

It Will All be Over Soon – Final Performance

it will all be over soon

it will all be over soon

Last monday, I gave my final performance for the class Media performance and I think it went really well. My final performance was a piece called It Will All be Over Soon, which resulted from combining a few of my projects from the class together. Here is a brief history of the evolution of the performance from conception to final presentation.

Edible 3D Printed Sculptures

As mentioned in a previous post, I have been learning a bit about grant/proposal writing in our class art as practice.

My friend and 2nd-year Interdisciplinary Arts & Media MFA candidate Chelsey Shilling and I have been looking for and writing grants recently to get funding to build our own 3D printer to print food and biological material.  That’s right—we are going to print food. Yes, that is awesome. There is already some really interesting work being done in this area. Some have dubbed 2013 the year of the 3D printer, and in a recent article by Smartplanet.com it was projected that 3D printing will enter the mainstream soon.

Work and Play and Spring Break

Old Band

Old Band

I propose we call spring break something else. The name is a little deceptive.  The word “break” suggests some time to relax. That’s just not the case. It is a week to work on big projects, which where due today and yesterday.

But it hasn’t been bad really. It’s actually been a bit of a refreshing break with time to relax, refocus, and refresh.  Whether I had time or not, I decided to schedule some “me time” anyway, and it was great.

People on a Stage

My friend and colleague Alexa Rittichier is currently working on her thesis project, People on a Stage.

People on a Stage is a performance ensemble made up of Lydia Feuerhelm, Jenny Garnett, Emily Rose, Courtney St.Clair, Michael Chad St. John, and Don Widmer. The performers make interdisciplinary performance work grown from the experience of being together as a collective through time. The process of making performance work each week is a form of artistic cross-training with a physical activity—examples include acroyoga, rock climbing, Butoh, modern dance, and cardio weight lifting.
