Machine Nirvana: CNC Mill Winter Workshop

IMG_1002

The poster that caught my attention as soon as I saw it…

Last week I took a one-credit class that I’ve been eyeing for a while now: CNC Milling and Modeling. Columbia has a nice long winter break, but there are some classes scheduled during the J-term (what we call the winter period). When I heard this class was going to be offered over the break, I jumped. CNC milling is a “computer numeric controlled” process for milling objects, using instructions given from code generated by 3-D software. The mill itself is a large, noisy, industrial machine—in other words, my favorite!

Grooved In & Around Town

home

At home with Jacob

Grad school life is busy, no doubt about that. Grad school in Chicago has its very own flavor, one I’ve grown to appreciate more and more, especially as I’ve developed routines and affinities in the last two-and-a-half years. And it doesn’t hurt that Columbia’s South Loop location makes getting around and getting what I need super easy.

Open Studios – Behind the Scenes

Open studios poster

The top half of the poster I designed with work by Morgan Sayers, Woody Leslie, and Yunji Johanning

Having an Open Studios event seems like it ought to be relatively easy, right? Choose a date, invite some people, everyone tidies up their studio a little… and then wait for people to come.

Yeah… not so much.

The Salon, Always Fantastic

First year MFA student Ian Kerstetter

First year student Ian Kerstetter

In the Interdisciplinary Arts & Media program, one recurring event stands out as a student favorite: the salon. About once a month, we gather in the “Raw Space” (a big black box room that has a lighting grid) to get together and show each other our work. It is a student-run event that we program entirely. Most of the time, students present work – sometimes we ask faculty or other artists.

The Last Critique

_MG_6812

My presentation of “Mourning Michele, Evening Sky.”

Last Monday, October 5, 2015, was my very last major critique. We have one annual critique a year in the Interdisciplinary Arts & Media MFA program, and for the first and second year students, the critiques are in the spring semester and we present work done over the year. But for thesis year students – the year I am now in – our critique is in the fall semester and we present our thesis proposal.

Weisman Award Exhibition Reception: It’s All Good

A look down the main room of the Arcade Gallery during the reception.

A look down the main room of the Arcade Gallery during the reception.

Last Friday was a day that I had been looking forward to for a long time: The Albert P. Weisman Award Exhibition Reception. I was one of fifteen students at Columbia who last spring received the annual Weisman award to complete a project that was already underway. In my case, that was a solo exhibition, Edgewater Oriented Ontology, that showed in the college’s C33 Gallery in April of 2015.

Another stellar Salon

April Interarts Salon

The Interarts salons are always a great time to show work and see what other faculty and students are up too. With Presentations from three students and three faculty, our April salon was particularly good.

IMAGE UNIT

There are a number of ways to get involved with the Interdisciplinary Arts community outside the classroom.

For the last 3 years (2 of which I have served as Vice President)  I have been involved in the Student Group Image Unit, a group of primarily media artists in the Interdisciplinary Arts department. The purpose of the group is to foster collaborative and individual creative excellence, within and beyond Columbia, by promoting the work of our members, improve community via creative exchange, and to empower emerging artists in professional development.  In this blog post I thought it would be fun to discuss three of the most popular events Image Unit is involved in:
