I survived this semester

I am feeling so incredibly THANKFUL these days. So many big projects have been underway this semester, and I have to say at times I couldn’t quite tell if I was swimming or sinking along the way. Looking back, I now realize how wonderfully everything truly came together. However, I have to admit that this was the most difficult semester I have experienced yet. With this in mind, I am feeling determined to see the bright side of how this semester really panned out, reflecting back on what I am grateful for.

A recent Alumnus from the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling program, Malorie McGee has been making the most of her first year out in the “real world” after just recently walking in May of 2014. Her summer consisted of acquiring a full time job, working towards her R-DMT, and continuing to write her thesis. All-in-all, Malorie is a great example of how the DMT&C program continues to serve its post-grads!

Well it’s that time of the year again, the annual MOVED dance concert is almost here (Nov 20 & 21 to be exact!) and I can’t wait to get on stage and perform. However this time around as the current president of MOVED, I get to experience the producing end of things as well…

When I first started the dance/movement therapy & counseling program here at Columbia College Chicago, I heard nothing but amazing things about Stacey Hurst. After my first year here, I am truly beginning to realize why.

I have to write WHAT?!

One of the biggest undertakings that we have as second year dance/movement therapy & counseling students here at Columbia College Chicago is the development of our thesis proposals. We are finally making decisions about when, where, what, why and how we are going to accomplish our research for our theses. One of the first and biggest steps towards accomplishing our thesis includes submitting a thesis proposal to the DTC (Departmental Thesis Committee) in order to get approval to move on to the next phase of the process!

If you want to meet a woman who is essentially “taking on the world” then you need to meet Monimia Macbeth. As a fellow colleague, I cannot help but be in awe of this woman and her passion.  Attending graduate school, serving as a program director for a non-profit, AND performing as a member of a nationally renowned dance theater??  She is so incredibly driven and an absolute inspiration to me.

Now that fall semester of my second year in graduate school is in full swing, I’m starting to realize how quickly time is truly flying by. Thinking back to when I was first applying, I remember reading a former blog about what the typical day of a first year Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling student looked like, and how illuminating it was for me. Now that I have been given the opportunity to continue the role of graduate ambassador for my program, I would love to shed some light on what the life of a second year Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling student really looks like.

It’s crazy to believe that an entire year has gone by. Having just recently completed our summer semester, it was a bittersweet ending to our first official year at Columbia College Chicago. Our lives have been filled with so many endings this semester, but with endings comes very hopeful beginnings. I can’t wait to see what my second year in the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling program has in store for me!

Bobbi & Mimi

A great thing about being a member of the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling program at Columbia College Chicago is that we are always given the opportunity to continue performing. Every summer we put on the Student/Faculty Dance Concert, where we get the chance to collaborate and perform with our fellow colleagues and faculty members. It was a really wonderful experience to perform again, and it was just the break that I needed in the midst of this summer!
