Changing With the Seasons

Finals time is finally here and in the midst of all the final papers and tests I have taken a break to reflect on my first year of being a part of the program.  Though the past year has been very challenging, I wouldn’t have changed it one bit…well…maybe I would have tried a little harder to avoid a couple all nighters working on papers–but that’s about it!  The beautiful thing about this program is that it promotes the very essence of our work as future therapists–Change.  For example, I have learned the importance of getting a good night’s sleep!  After all, how can I help my clients if I don’t make sure to take care of myself?  And while sleep may be difficult to come by this week due to finals, I am reminded of this: change is a process.

Spring Cupcakes

Crunch time!  As I get ready to round the last several weeks of the semester I am working on maintaining my sanity as I continue to burn the midnight oil.  As I have further begun to work on my time management skills, I have found three things to be essential in coping with these last weeks.  So here are some things that I have found to help me with avoiding an end of semester burnout.

Previously I had discussed my interest in receiving certification from one of the certificate programs offered at Columbia.  This week I am going to focus on the Graduate Laban Certificate in Movement Analysis (GL – CMA) program.

What some people may not know is that GL – CMA can be used across many fields such as directors, teachers, performers, coaches, and therapists.  The program helps to develop the knowledge across disciplines by re-educating students in the movement of the body.

Since I am nearing the end of my first year as a student in Columbia’s Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling MA program, I have begun to look into the other certifications that the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling Department offers.

What many may not know about is that, in addition to offering a 60-credit masters program in DMT&C, my department also offer three certification programs—one of which is the Movement Pattern Analysis Consultant Certificate (MPACC).

Since this profession started in the early 1940’s, DMT has shown effectiveness across many populations.  After I receive my degree from Columbia, I can work in a wide range of situations, particularly because I will have the opportunity to not only be a registered dance movement therapist but also a licensed professional counselor (LPC).

You can become a Licensed Professional Counselor and a dance movement therapist.

Dance is “in”.

Let’s face it: If you are considering becoming a DMT, you have probably always known that dance was awesome for many reasons.  However, with movies and shows like Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Next Dance Crew, and the Academy Award winning Silver Lining’s Playbook, dance is getting more attention from the public and re-entering pop culture.  Not only that, but in shows like Dancing with the Stars, the public is beginning to see the dramatic transformation that dance can provide on a mental as well as physical level.  Many are seeing the changes that dance is making in people’s lives and wanting to get a piece of the action.

This past weekend for me was jam-packed with dance, and, though I am still a little exhausted from the weekend activities, it was completely worth it.  First, I had the opportunity to go check out the 7th annual DMTC Alumni concert.  All of the proceeds from the concert went to a current student in the Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling program, and the winner was announced on Friday night.  The beautiful thing about this show is that it gives all of the alumni an opportunity to continue creating.  Also, the proceeds from this concert go to one lucky student, and this year the winner was Chih Hsien Lin.

The Clinical Placement Process: Part II

A few months back, I had begun describing the clinical placement process. As a first-year Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling MA student, I am required to take part in both a practicum and internship experience during the second year of the program.  Having the opportunity to work in two separate settings will give me the chance to apply all of the skills that I have been developing in my grad program.  However, before I can take part in an internship or a practicum, I must first go through the clinical placement process, which began in early November for me.

Why Research?

A topic of discussion that has recently been raised in my Research Methods class is the subject of why dance movement therapists do research.  I felt as though this was an interesting discussion, because, while I have always had my own personal reasons of why research is important, some of the reasons that came up were both enlightening and inspiring to me.
