Therapeutic Arts Program Trip in Kenya & Tanzania

Therapeutic Arts Program Trip in Kenya & Tanzania

This winter break I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Kenya and Tanzania (East Africa) to participate in a therapeutic arts program trip organized by Global Alliance for Africa (GAA). Over two weeks (January 12–25), I had the opportunity to not only travel through and get to know the countries, their cultures, and their customs, but also to work together with local artists and other creative art therapists to learn, experience, have fun, and grow professionally as a future dance/movement therapist.

Uncertainties/Possibilities

New year, no possibilities!

New year, new possibilities!

The end of a year (academic as well as calendar year) always prompts people to look back. It is a time of reflection and evaluation, to see what went well and what did not. This year it also forces me to look forward. For me, 2016 will be a year of change and uncertainty. Graduation, starting to work on my master thesis, uncertainty if I will be able to stay in the U.S. or not… there are many things I cannot control or foresee.

Home sweet home

Done with the semester!

Done with the semester!

Tatatataaaa! I did it! I survived my 5th semester (if I count the two summer semesters) and I am now enjoying 6 weeks of winter break! I cannot even describe how excited I am about having six weeks without work, internship, school, assignments, or other responsibilities. Because I am spending most of the time at my parents place, I do not even have to pay for my groceries or cook for myself. I can be a spoiled child to my heart’s content!

Winter break? Please?!

ALMOST DONE!!!

ALMOST DONE!!!

It is that time of the year! The semester is coming to an end and I cannot wait to take a break. Probably because of my crazy schedule, the feelings of being overwhelmed, exhausted, and done with the world hit me much sooner than I expected. Already before Thanksgiving, I was ready to jump on a plane and to fly back to Germany, where I would not have to care about working on assignments, in the office, or at my internship site. The thought of just staying in bed all day, walking around in my pajamas, and having my mother and my sister cook for me (they enjoy cooking, I enjoy eating…perfect match!) sounds like paradise.

Reflecting – Reaching – Moving Forward

Sundown in sunny San Diego

Sundown in sunny San Diego

After waiting for almost a year, the primary event for every prospective or current dance/movement therapist (in my opinion) had finally come: the annual conference of the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA). This years conference – held in sunny San Diego – marked the 50th anniversary. To honor this incredible number, the theme of this year’s conference was Reflecting – Reaching – Moving Forward. Because I think that this is one of the greatest events to broaden your horizon and to connect professionally, I flew to San Diego to experience 5 days of exciting seminars, dance, learn, and connect to dance/movement therapist from all around the world.

#The Struggle Is Real

Let's talk about MENTAL HEALTH

Let’s talk about MENTAL HEALTH!

“Police officers often respond to calls about people who are talking to themselves, acting erratic, going through the garbage, or just being in a place of business where the merchant wants them removed. They haven’t broken any laws; they just don’t fit the social norm. People are afraid of what they don’t understand…they don’t understand mental illness.”

“New Year’s Resolutions”

Reflections at the dog beach

Reflections at the dog beach.

Hello everybody! It is finally here, my first blog post! This is kind of exciting and scary at the same time. For the next year, I will try to present my experience of being a second year in Columbia College Chicago’s Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling program. I am glad that I survived the first year and am curious about what my second (and last) year in this program has to offer.

Saying Goodbye to My Ambassador Days

IMG_0841

Columbia College Chicago

I can’t believe my days as a graduate student ambassador have finally come to an end. What an amazing opportunity it truly was! I had such a blast representing the dance/movement therapy & counseling program these past two years, and I feel I should spend my last blog spilling the beans about how awesome it truly was.

When Passions Collide

Before I officially moved out of Chicago, I had the opportunity to collaborate with my good friend and amazing photographer, Brad McCree. We had always played around with idea of how incredibly fun it would be to combine both of our passions and spend a day taking dance pictures together in the city. So with my departure coming up so quickly, we decided to do just that. Brad and I spent the entire day playing in the city, going to all of our favorite locations, and discovering new ones. It was a beautiful Chicago day—and it was the perfect way for me to say goodbye to this fantastic city.
