I’m in Europe! Yes, the wonderful time of spring break has arrived. A time to rest and recuperate from months of studying, work and no sleep. So naturally I decided to take this week to travel to another continent, and visit FIVE different countries…

One of the most exciting things about the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling program is the opportunity we have to gain real clinical experience at our summer practicum and fall internship sites. The opportunity is amazing, however there are many steps along the way to completing the clinical placement process.

Dancing For Justice

Break The Chain (Photo courtesy of http://www.elitismstyle.com)

As a graduate student busy with work and school, it is often easy to feel a bit disconnected from your community. However here at Columbia College Chicago, there are ALWAYS opportunities to branch out beyond your specific department of study and become an influential person within society. The Department of Creative Arts Therapies is consistently offering these opportunities and many times it is through MOVED, our student organization. MOVED is always involved with branching out to the community with dance/movement therapy and this month we are doing our part for One Billion Rising.

To Roomie? Or Not To Roomie?

Roomates

Fun With Roommates

Many people have asked me about my living situation out here in Chicago and how I went about deciding on a roommate. Often the questions relate to whether living with someone in the same program is a good idea or not. I truly believe the option is ultimately up to you, but its a great idea to consider all of your options! With these questions constantly flooding my inbox, I thought it might be a good idea to ask my cohort, and get their opinions on the subject. With our responses, I compiled some general positives and negatives of each option you could choose!

No Place Like Home

Family

Being away from home is often difficult for many people, especially when one is engulfed by work and stress. However as a graduate student here at Columba College Chicago, we still have the opportunity to head home for the holidays after our first semester. During this time, I’ve come to realize how grateful I am to have the support system that I do in my life. I would not be where I am today without my wonderful family and friends. It’s so important to find strong interpersonal relationships within your life that will support your journey through graduate school.

I believe that much of what we interpret about life is based on our expectations. Now that it is officially the end of my very first semester here at Columbia College Chicago in the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling, MA program, I have been finding myself in a recurring state of reflection. Looking back on what I had originally expected this experience to look like for me; I am realizing now how much I have truly learned about myself, and about the actual reality of graduate school.

Within the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling MA program there are three electives available to us throughout our journey. These supplemental courses are available intermittently throughout fall, j-term and spring semesters, allowing us to conveniently fit them into our schedules at our own personal leisure. Each course is unique and offers yet another layer of depth to our education and experience here at Columbia College Chicago.

There are so many exciting perks that coincide with being a graduate student in the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling MA program here at Columbia College Chicago. One of the most exciting being the opportunity to become a member of MOVED, the student organization affiliated with the DMT&C MA program. Coping with “Homesickness”

Traveling Megabus style

Traveling Megabus style

We are beginning to hit the half-way mark of the semester and I think we are all starting to feel it in one way or another—Homesickness.  Everyone experiences this emotion differently and we all cope with it in our own way. To explore this idea a little deeper, I decided to open up this notion of “homesickness” to my cohort and questioned what they missed most about home and also how they personally coped. The answers I received were honest and exemplified the belief that even though we come from all walks of life, we are sharing a common experience and we are all in this together.

Finding a Balance

Some of my cohort practicing self-care

Some of my cohort practicing self-care

Now that fall semester has officially started, this new chaotic shift in life can definitely be a bit overwhelming. To put it quite lightly—this isn’t undergrad anymore folks! The workload is significantly heavier with professors expecting a greater deal from students, along with the questioning possibly of working outside of school, coupled with a strong desire to escape and explore the city with new friends or even set aside part of the day for much needed self-care. The main question running through all of our minds being, HOW CAN I DO IT ALL??
