If you want to meet a woman who is essentially “taking on the world” then you need to meet Monimia Macbeth. As a fellow colleague, I cannot help but be in awe of this woman and her passion.  Attending graduate school, serving as a program director for a non-profit, AND performing as a member of a nationally renowned dance theater??  She is so incredibly driven and an absolute inspiration to me.

Now that fall semester of my second year in graduate school is in full swing, I’m starting to realize how quickly time is truly flying by. Thinking back to when I was first applying, I remember reading a former blog about what the typical day of a first year Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling student looked like, and how illuminating it was for me. Now that I have been given the opportunity to continue the role of graduate ambassador for my program, I would love to shed some light on what the life of a second year Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling student really looks like.

Bittersweet Endings and Hopeful beginnings

Lake Huron

Lake Huron

It’s crazy to believe that an entire year has gone by. Having just recently completed our summer semester, it was a bittersweet ending to our first official year at Columbia College Chicago. Our lives have been filled with so many endings this semester, but with endings comes very hopeful beginnings. I can’t wait to see what my second year in the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling program has in store for me!

A great thing about being a member of the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling program at Columbia College Chicago is that we are always given the opportunity to continue performing. Every summer we put on the Student/Faculty Dance Concert, where we get the chance to collaborate and perform with our fellow colleagues and faculty members. It was a really wonderful experience to perform again, and it was just the break that I needed in the midst of this summer!

How do graduate students stay active?

Chicago Color Run 2014

Chicago Color Run 2014

As summer progresses and the workload begins to weigh more and more—I am starting to realize how integral the exercising portion of my self-care practice truly is. It’s funny how something that we truly need so much—we often put on the back burner when life starts to get rough. However, as busy graduate students, we all need to find the time to practice our own unique ways of staying active for our health, our happiness, and even our sanity!

You have to be FEARLESS to be a dance/movement therapist

It takes a tremendous amount of vulnerability and courage to make it through the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling program here at Columbia College Chicago. As emerging therapists, we are constantly shedding layers of ourselves as we attempt to dive deeper into the core of who we truly are as human beings as well as future healers. This month, we decided to be “fearless” and shed a few extra layers together both literally and metaphorically.

Now that the intense cold of an endless winter is officially over—it’s time to finally enjoy an amazing summer in the windy city! Chicago is filled with endless possibilities for fun in the sun and I’m so grateful to be spending my summer semester here. There are a couple perks I am especially excited about, though.

I’m nearing the end of my very first year here at Columbia College Chicago. I can’t believe I have almost completed an entire year of graduate school already—what an accomplishment! However, after I turn in my final papers, present my final projects and take my final exams…I think reality is finally going to set in. School’s out for summer, right?! Not exactly the case for those of us in the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling program.
