A Peaceful J-Term

After a wonderfully long and luxurious holiday break at home with my family, it was finally time for me to head back to the windy city. However, I haven’t come back to start my coursework quite yet—J-Term is a wonderful time of the year in which we have the month of January free, with the opportunity to utilize the time however we see fit. Last J-Term, I used the time to take some of our departmental electives, and continue nannying. This J-Term however, I came back for my clients.

Through the Department of Creative Arts Therapies (DCAT), we have the opportunity to partake in the certification programs as well. One of which is the Movement Pattern Analysis Certificate (MPAC) program. Movement is a powerful way to understand human motivation and behavior, even in the workplace. Columbia’s Movement Pattern Analysis Certificate Program is unique: As the only program of its kind in the WORLD, this graduate certification trains you to analyze individuals’ movement patterns to help organizational leaders better manage teams and increase worker efficiency. Weekend classes make this program ideal for working professionals, and the entire program takes a total of 12 months to complete. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to interview a current student within the MPAC program, and she had a lot to say about her experience thus far!

Welcoming 2015 with some Grad School Resolutions

It’s officially that time of year again: delicious food, fantastic parties, ridiculous sweaters, quality time with family and friends, and of course New Year’s resolutions. This is a time during grad school I can honestly say that I am attempting to relax and not think about my thesis or anything else school-related (believe me it has NOT been easy). Amongst all of the holiday cheer, I can’t help but look back on the year of 2014 with absolute awe. So much has changed for me, and I am incredibly grateful for how much I have experienced this year. At the same time, this fantastic year makes me want 2015 to be my best year yet—which is why I have decided on a few New Year’s resolutions (and goals) for 2015: My last year of graduate school.

Through the Department of Creative Arts Therapies (DCAT), we have the opportunity to partake in the certification programs offered as well. One of which is the Graduate Laban Certificate in Movement Analysis (GL-CMA). Through this program, anyone can learn to apply Rudolf Laban’s theory of movement analysis to body/mind therapies, dance, theatre, education, performance, athletics and rehabilitation. In this integrated graduate-level curriculum, you’ll study Laban’s taxonomy in depth, hone your observation skills and earn certified movement analyst (CMA) credentials. Weekend classes make this program ideal for working adult learners, and the entire program takes a total of 14 months to complete. Luckily, I had the opportunity to interview a couple current students within the GL-CMA program and they had a lot to say about their experience thus far!

I survived this semester

I am feeling so incredibly THANKFUL these days. So many big projects have been underway this semester, and I have to say at times I couldn’t quite tell if I was swimming or sinking along the way. Looking back, I now realize how wonderfully everything truly came together. However, I have to admit that this was the most difficult semester I have experienced yet. With this in mind, I am feeling determined to see the bright side of how this semester really panned out, reflecting back on what I am grateful for.

A recent Alumnus from the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling program, Malorie McGee has been making the most of her first year out in the “real world” after just recently walking in May of 2014. Her summer consisted of acquiring a full time job, working towards her R-DMT, and continuing to write her thesis. All-in-all, Malorie is a great example of how the DMT&C program continues to serve its post-grads!

I have to write WHAT?!

One of the biggest undertakings that we have as second year dance/movement therapy & counseling students here at Columbia College Chicago is the development of our thesis proposals. We are finally making decisions about when, where, what, why and how we are going to accomplish our research for our theses. One of the first and biggest steps towards accomplishing our thesis includes submitting a thesis proposal to the DTC (Departmental Thesis Committee) in order to get approval to move on to the next phase of the process!

If you want to meet a woman who is essentially “taking on the world” then you need to meet Monimia Macbeth. As a fellow colleague, I cannot help but be in awe of this woman and her passion.  Attending graduate school, serving as a program director for a non-profit, AND performing as a member of a nationally renowned dance theater??  She is so incredibly driven and an absolute inspiration to me.
