Spring Semester is Over!

I am sick and at work

I am sick and at work

When you read this, I will be done with Spring semester.

WOOOOOOO!!!! I’d look more excited in that picture if I wasn’t sick right now. In May. AWFUL. :(

It’s been a long semester, y’all! And I had a great time, but aren’t we all glad to have a bit of a breather? For us writers, it’s nice to have time to write whatever we want to write. I’ve been averaging 25 pages a week between three classes, which is a lot of pages. While I like what I am writing, I sometimes want to set it aside and do something completely different, that has nothing to do with a story I need to revise, part of my novel, or part of my thesis. It’s nice to write an essay or a memoir piece or a short satire every now and then.

How we come up with stories

The Agora

The Agora

We play a lot of games in class. It is meant to be generative and to help us get to that creative place where anything can happen.

We start in a semi-circle. The teacher sits looking at the circle and facilitates a game called “One Word.” Sometimes, we play a different game, but it’s almost always—at least in my experience—this configuration. We start spit-balling words and saying unplanned things, going around the semi-circle. So, someone can say “House,” but the next person can’t say “Apartment” because it is related. Instead, we listen for surprise words in the back of our minds.

My Week in Writing

New student swag

New student swag

What’s been going on in the writing world this week?

Well, for starters, I am writing notes to all of the incoming MFA candidates in brand new Moleskin notebooks! I’m excited for them to begin their journey, and I think a quote from Bradbury is appropriate: “You’ve got to jump off cliffs and build your wings on the way down.” That’s what we do as writers, and that is what Columbia inspires us to do. Here’s the note:

Structuring a Novel

Laurie Lawlor teaching

Laurie Lawlor teaching

Right now, I’m starting to work on my thesis, which will be a novel. I’m in an Advanced Young Adult Fiction class, and something we went over in class this week has really taken root in how I am planning the narrative arc of my novel for my thesis. We were talking about the wider, over-arching narrative of a novel, especially when using a three-act structure. Laurie Lawlor, my teacher, broke it down for us.

Things I’ve been reading!

I’ve been reading a lot lately, and here are a few of the books that I’ve read or am in the process of reading.

Vampires

Vampires

1) Vampires in the Lemon Grove (Karen Russell)

With a collection of short stories, Russell is a master of her game. Each story is poignant and has elements of magical realism or bizarreness that scream of Russell’s personal style and voice. These are stories to be savored, to be read one at a time and then carefully ruminated. At times funny and mostly haunting, she’ll stay with you.

Weather Blues

I miss FL pools

I miss FL pools

There are some days where you wish you’d rather be somewhere else, and I think the cold that’s been going on for the past five months is finally getting to me. I love Chicago—it’s the greatest American city, in my opinion. But this weather? It has got to go! I was scrolling through pictures tonight and found the one above. I took it in 2011, right before I moved to Chicago. It’s a picture of the pool at my old condo in Fort Myers, Florida (Dunk City!—have you SEEN how incredible FGCU is doing in March Madness? Yeah, I still actually work for that school and have my MA from there—no big deal), and sometimes, despite how much I didn’t really enjoy living in Florida, I want to go back.

Spring Break!

Ireland

No, I’m not going to Ireland. I wish! For Spring Break, I’m going to play in a rugby tournament in St. Louis. Other then that, I’m going to write a lot. I have this beast to work on:

What I’ve Been Writing

Palm trees

Palm trees

On my flight home from Los Angeles this weekend, I was unplugged from the internet and my phone for the first time in my writing history in a long time. Generally, I have my phone on and Facebook and YouTube up in the background when I write. This doesn’t make me unproductive, but it makes me less productive. I can write a couple thousand words in a day, usually capping off at 3K in five-six hours. In the 2.5 hours on the flight during which I was allowed to have my computer, I wrote 4,500 words, which ballooned to 5,000 with my revision the next day (also sans distraction).

And so, what did I write? Well, that was a section of my novel-in-progress for my thesis material. In the section I wrote (on a plane), I was imagining my main character, who was also sitting on a plane, imagining the seven ways in which her husband might have died. She’s flying to San Francisco in this section, on her way to identify her husband’s body. He died under mysterious pretenses, which she’ll learn when she discovers it is his body.

Writer’s Block

Writer’s Block is something I thought I didn’t believe in, and then I put off writing this blog post. In fact, I don’t know how to accurately portray what this is, because it’s not like you have a piece of paper that is blank in front of you if you have Writer’s Block. No, usually you have some paper with doodles, scribbles, lines that sounded good enough to write down but not good enough to commit to a project.

Y’all, Writer’s Block sucks.
