Hanging art at the President’s House

Back in January, my friend and former ShopColumbia colleague, Shannon Bourne, asked me to help her hang a small show at none other than the President’s house. President Warrick Carter, that is.

Record Store Day 2013

Record Store Day 2013: The Genius Of Komeda by Komeda

Record Store Day 2013: The Genius Of Komeda by Komeda

This year Record Store Day took place on April 20. As part of my internship at Minty Fresh, I helped put together a reissue of Komeda’s Genius Of Komeda. for release on Record Store Day. It sold out.

Record Store Day began in 2008 and takes place every third Saturday in April as a way to celebrate the indie record store. The day is all about supporting your local record store and buying one of the many new and re-issued vinyls available as Record Store Day exclusives. Limited edition vinyl and CDs are made for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States make in-store appearances. This year I got my hands on At The Drive-In’s Relationship of Command, one of my favorite albums of all time!

Chicago to London

My luggage

My luggage

Two weeks ago I travelled back to the UK for my friend’s wedding. It was my first time returning to the UK in fifteen months. Despite traveling in the most manically busy semester to date, it was a fantastic trip and allowed me to reflect on a few differences between the US and the UK.

The Music Industry and Premium Content

PledgeMusic

I am currently doing an independent project on revenue generation in the music industry. I am looking at how content owners (artists, labels, etc.) are generating income from their assets and what technologies they are adopting in order to do this more efficiently. Within these parameters the project is shaping up to be somewhat of a monster! One trend that I have been monitoring is how content owners are beginning to reevaluate the life cycle of an album or single release by using websites such as PledgeMusic and Kickstarter.

Behind the Curtain

Featured on "Behind the Curtain"

Just before the end of last year, I was contacted by a prospective Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management graduate student named Philip Hernandez. He had questions about the program, and during our interaction he told me that he hosts a podcast called Behind The Curtain on which he interviews professionals in the AEMM field. When he asked if I would like to be interviewed on the podcast, I couldn’t say no! I actually think it turned out well, and, if you are thinking about Columbia and the AEMM program, I think it could be a useful source of information (but I will let you be the judge of that!).

The Road to SXSW: Part 2

Swear & Shake at Peckerheads, SXSW

Swear & Shake at Peckerheads, SXSW

My first SXSW experience has been and gone, but the after effects are still being felt. I am worn out! I had it on good authority that it it was going to be an amazing experience, but nothing could have prepared me for quite how amazing it was. If I wrote about everything I did, you would still be reading by this time next year, so here are some of the highlights…

The Road to SXSW: Part 1

SXSW logo 2013

Up until two weeks ago, I had not planned on going to South by Southwest (SXSW). All of a sudden, an opportunity to go fell in my lap, and, the next thing I knew, I had a ticket and was frantically asking around for places to stay.

Being in a Band Again

The tools

The tools

So, I started a band. Well, the nucleus of one at least. It is more of a songwriting duo at the moment, but I am excited. We have no band name and we rehearse in each others apartments but it is slowly coming together. It has been a while since I have written music with someone else, and I almost forgot how awesome it is.

AEMM’s Club Management Practicum

Homeroom Songwriter ShowcaseThis week, I interviewed one of my fellow classmates, Laura Wilkinson, about her participation in the Club Management practicum class offered by the AEMM Department. Next week, the class will be hosting their first student-run event of the semester called the Homeroom Songwriter Showcase.
