Goodbye Student Teaching, Hello Graduation!

Student Artwork!!

Student Artwork!!

My students were so amazing. I finished student teaching on May 10th, and as much of an adjustment as it was to get into the swing of the student teaching schedule at first, it’s been as big of an adjustment to not be waking in the mornings to teach! I’ve been missing my kids.

Meeting the Folks and Facing the Music

High School Student Artwork

High School Student Artwork

This week’s adventures in Chicago Public Schools included a Local School Council Meeting and report card pick ups.

Earlier this week I got to sit in on a Local School Council meeting at a CPS school where the curriculum is changing to a “Wall to Wall IB” (International Baccalaureate)  program. About ten tenured teachers lost their jobs in what seems like a breach of contract. The meeting was incredibly intense with Chicago Teachers Union representatives present as well as with teachers voicing their anger and concern to the administration. While parents seem to have varying opinions on the curriculum change, the faculty I saw seems to be of one mind—that this “change” is being used as an excuse to overhaul teachers.

I don’t know why I feel even slightly surprised by how quickly grad school has gone by, but I am. I almost feel silly admitting it.

I’m sitting at my desk with what I’m sure my computer thinks (or at least is acting like) there are a million Google Chrome windows open. Most of them are job related things. Fine…and Facebook…and Pinterest (I don’t know what it is about Pinterest!) I remember starting this program in the fall of 2011, and it doesn’t seem like it was that long ago. I’m not going to be ridiculous and say it seems like yesterday, because that would constitute the longest day ever. I’ll say it seems more like the month before last…or six months ago. Not two years.

Migration, Immigration, and Art

Nightlife. Archibald Motley

Archibald Motley. Nightlife. 1943 Oil on Canvas.

Last Saturday I spent the day at the Art Institute and stumbled upon an amazing exhibit on the lower level of the Modern Wing called They Seek a City: Chicago and the Art of Migration. This show explores artists immigrating from Europe and African American artists migrating from the south during a period called the Great Migration.

NAEA 2013

Last weekend, I attended the National Art Educators Association Conference in Fort Worth, Texas with my classmates from the Columbia NAEA Student Chapter. Being surrounded with educators from around the country confirmed my belief that I am entering the best profession.  It was an engaging weekend, and I am inspired to utilize all that I was presented with. In the above picture, I’m the last one standing up on the left.

The Life of a Student Teacher

NAEA Conference in Texas is Next Week!!

I think all of my posts for the past few weeks have been student teaching related. That’s because student teaching pretty much defines my entire existence these days. Sleep and what little free time I had has gone by the wayside. The funny thing is, I’m not even grumpy about it.
