Every journey begins with that first step! As NAMIWalks celebrates their 12th Anniversary as the largest and most successful mental health awareness fundraising event in America, people from all around the country have been coming together in order to do their part for mental illness. So of course MOVED was eager to jump on the opportunity to contribute to this incredible cause!

Mental illness affects everyone. Nearly 60 million Americans experience a mental health condition every year. Regardless of race, age, religion or economic status, mental illness impacts the lives of at least one in four adults and one in ten children across the United States. People living with mental illness need hope and they need a community that supports them. As dance/movement therapists, it is vital to be aware of these staggering facts and do our part as future healers!

NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness and is the nation’s largest mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, supports, research, and is committed to raising awareness and building a community of hope for all of those in need. Through NAMIWalks‘ public, active display of support for people affected by mental illness, we are beginning to change how Americans perceive persons with mental illness.

It was wonderful to witness so many people attending NAMIwalks in Chicago this year! Many organizations took the time to fund raise in order to help the cause, including MOVED. It was an awesome experience and I loved being able to witness it!
