CALL FOR APPLICATION
TRANSIT and the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum are inviting Chicago area (from Cook or Lake counties) artists, printers, and book artists to apply for a two-week residency at the museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin to take place in Spring 2014.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
This residency was established to provide opportunities for artists to research and develop their own practice, to further the professional development of artists by enabling the creation and production of new work, and to foster an exchange of ideas and influences.

Hamilton’s rural setting provides a tranquil space to live and work for two weeks (option of third week with advance planning). The museum offers a professional workshop specializing in letterpress printing for an artist demonstrating practical knowledge of printmaking or bookmaking. The 45,000 sq. foot museum hosts a 5,000 sq. foot working letterpress studio and three studios specifically for working artists. There are dozens of vintage presses and over 350 cases of type available. The museum and pressroom are located in what was previously a manufacturing facility on the shores of Lake Michigan, which provides a unique working environment. Artists are allowed access to the facilities from 9:30 am to 5 pm Tuesday – Saturday (and 1-5pm on Sundays, between May 1 and November 1). Housing, travel and materials are at the artist’s expense except where TRANSIT has taken care of costs per written agreement with Artist in Residence prior to the beginning of their residency (and with the compliance of Hamilton staff).

Upon completion of the residency, artist shall donate 10% of their work for the museum to use how they see fit. The artist may be required to engage with the community during their residency; this will be discussed further with the artist prior to their arrival at Hamilton.

TIMELINE
Applications must be received by TRANSIT by December 1, 2013.

Selected artist(s) will be notified early February 2014.

The Residency shall take place between March 1 and June 1, 2014. (Specific dates to be determined by Hamilton staff and Artist-in-Residence shortly after notification.)
