CBPA to Host Holiday Benefit Print Sale for Hamilton Wood Type Museum

Classes are coming to a close for the fall 2012 semester, but the Center for Book and Paper Arts will continue humming with holiday fun, starting with the December 15 Benefit Print Sale for Hamilton Wood Type Museum. The event includes an open house, demonstrations, and print sale, with all proceeds to benefit the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum.

This landmark museum in Two Rivers, WI has been a long-time partner with the Center for Book and Paper Arts. The two cultural organizations work closely together on a number of programs, including an exhibition in fall 2011 on experimental wood type. Center staff has lectured at their annual national conference and the museum has hosts regular student field trips from Columbia College.

In May of 2012 a number of Book and Paper Graduate students made a special trip up to Hamilton to assist in a massive cleanup after a night of heavy rain had flooded a large section of the museum and inundated many cases of wood type. “To have the Hamilton Museum so near Chicago is so amazing, says third-year Book + Paper MFA Hannah King. “Each time I go to visit, I get more and more attached to the type collection, the Hamilton factory where the museum is held, and the town of Two Rivers… it’s like another version of home.”

The Museum is being evicted from its current historic space, and is asking for community support to make the impending move possible. The open house event is a chance for the Chicago book and paper community to donate time and original printed material to the cause, turning love of type and original artwork into the dream of a new home for the museum.
